The Internet2 consortium is a collection of research and education facilities. Its aims are to bring these leading people from the Academic world and mix them with the leaders of industry, to facilitate the development, deployment and usage of the next range of internet technologies, using the internet2 high speed network.
The website is aimed at Industry leaders, as well as businesses and webmasters, who are looking to pay for the pleasure of using its high speed networking research facilities.
In my opinion, the internet2 consortium does not reach its target audience, it seems the public at large is not aware, that a complete second set of infrastructure exists, which is all fibre optic and is at the forefront of research and testing.
The site is not relevant to me, as I currently have no projects, that could make use of the Infrastructure, but if I was a large conglomerate, I could definitely see the benefits.
An interesting fact from the www.internet2.edu website is that, one of its facilities has a network observatory, which helps members to manage and better understand the inner workings of large scale infrastructure.
The website could be improved by changing the style sheet being used, at present the font is unreadable on my monitor, not enough information is giving about the individual members and member projects.
I personally would not encourage anyone to visit the site at present; it is more something I would advise people to keep an eye on, for the future.
The website referenced in the text book, now redirects users to www.w3.org.
1) W3c
a. The W3c got started back in October 1994, by Tim burners-lee the founder of the World Wide Web. The aims of the W3c are to ensure that everybody has access to the latest communication and commerce opportunities. The w3c aims to standardize web technologies.
b. It seems anyone is able to Join the consortium, if they are willing to pay the fees, if the your organisation, is a profit making organization and has annual gross revenue greater than or equal to 51,000,000 EUR, then the fees are 68,000 EUR, for all other organizations the fees are 7800 EUR.
c. The W3c homepage does not list any technologies, it issues updated standards for technologies, but technology from the site as a whole is HTML & CSS, three facts for these are:
i. With HTML, you can publish online documents using tables, text, lists and photos.
ii. Include spread-sheets, sound clips, video clips directly in your document.
iii. HTML provides the structure to the web page; the CSS provide the visual and aural layout.
2) The Internet Society
a. The Internet society was formed in 1992, to provide leadership in internet related standards, education and policy. The internet society offers internet related incentives around the world, and as helped in the enablement of developing world countries, training programmes to help people set up internet connections and networks.
b. The Internet society England Chapter is my personally closet chapter (http://www.isoc-e.org/). A recent event this chapter offered was The Internet revolution: Opportunities, threats and challenges to your business - ignore it at your peril! – This conference was highlighting the health of the internet, and the main theme being, how will the internet look in ten years?
c. Anyone can join the internet society, you can join as a Global member for free, or you can join as a sustaining member for 75 US Dollars. Benefits of being a sustaining member is that once 500 members have joined together, they can elect their own ISOC board of trustee’s member. I would not recommend a new developer joining the Internet society, as its information is more relevant to Project managers or Business leaders.
3) World Organisation of webmasters
a. Anyone can join WOW, by visiting their website at: http://webprofessionals.org/join/. Membership prices range from 29 USD for a student or to 69 USD for an individual; prices for organisation are not listed publicly.
b. An upcoming event is the IT Innovation summit, which seeks to bring IT professionals, industry leaders and keynote speakers. One of the highlights of the event is a discussion into whether innovation creates or destroys jobs. I think as a whole, I would like to attend, as one of guests is the former chief technology officers for Cisco Systems.
c. Three ways that WOW could help progress my career as a programmer are;
i. WOW helps to keep you abreast of changing web technologies.
ii. They get you in contact with other IT webmasters in your area or in your area of expertise.
iii. They offer training courses varying from short courses to online resources.

Website designs that I find of Interest
Although this website does not follow any documented standards, in my opinion it is simply a work of art. The character of Jim Carrey is mirrored by his website.
Although an obvious choice, this site recently polled number 1 in the most visited internet sites. It has changed the way, we interact online, the days of forums and chat rooms are dead.
Sound cloud, is an audio hosting website. Sound cloud has some very interesting design features, such as its audio file graphical view and the simplified layout of the site.
The link above is for a friend of mine, who is at Anglia Ruskin, studying music technology.
